Wailea Golf Courses In Wailea, there are three championship courses; Old Blue, the Emerald, and the Gold. Each course is unique, but Emerald is probably the most forgiving of the three and plays shorter than the other two. The original course is Old Blue which was developed in 1974, but has gone through extensive updating and offers wide fairways. The Gold course has undulating fairways with strategically placed sand traps which affords the most challenging play of the three. All the courses offer exquisite views of the ocean and the outer islands as well as Mount Haleakala. It’s worth just riding around the course on the cart to enjoy the stunning scenery, particularly on the Emerald and Gold courses. Makena Golf Courses South of Wailea is Makena. Makena’s two 18-hole courses are presently going through extensive change. The South Course, once a public course, is being redesigned by Robert Trent Jones to the tune of $25 million. The South Course will become private and will be available for play only to members and their guests. The other 18-hole course, the North Course remains open to the public and offers some of the best vistas of any course in South Maui. To say that this well-maintained course is challenging is an understatement, and it is very popular among golfers. Kihei Golf Courses North of Wailea/Makena is the Elleair Golf Course in. This course gives the best “bang for the buck” for 18 holes in South Maui. Elleair has recently undergone an $18 million renovation by its owners who are hoping to attract an LPGA event to the site. The greens of Elleair are particularly well maintained and the course is user-friendly. However, a word to the wise: It’s best to play in the mornings because the afternoon trade winds can be brutal. Central Maui Golf Courses In Central Maui there are three courses; two at Waikapu which back up to the West Maui Mountains, and one in Kahului, referred to as the Dunes. The Waikapu courses were built by a Japanese investor in the early 1990s and no cost was spared, including a $35 million dollar clubhouse. However, the courses were not well-maintained, and approximately two years ago, they were sold to new owners. Both courses have experienced a complete renovation and realignment. The Kahili course is still open to the public and the Kamehamha course went private. The private course at the King Kamehameha Golf Club has an exotic clubhouse. Both courses are now beautifully maintained, and the public course is farily easy to get on. On days when the trade winds are blowing, these courses will challenge even the most skilled golfers. The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course is open to the public and reasonably priced. This course plays more like a Scottish links course, where accuracy and touch is paramount to a good score. Reservations at this course are requested. |
