Back in the early 1900s, there was an unsuccessful attempt to turn the land into a sugar plantation. However, there were no paved roadways and good fishing was the only thing that attracted people to Kihei. By 1930, there were only 350 people who called Kihei home. Between the ‘30s and the ‘50s, Kihei real estate sold for a little as $225 an acre, but still no one wanted to live or work there.
Then in 1960, water was piped into Kihei from Central and West Maui and things changed. Developers saw an area just ripe for sun-loving tourists. Development started in earnest, and very quickly, the area had a full complement of condominium complexes, shopping centers and strip malls. By the ‘70s and ‘80s tourists began to flock to Kihei. As of the 2000 census, there were approximately 16,000 residents in Kihei.
Shopping in Kihei is easy. There are many shopping centers here, but Azeka in the center of town, is the largest with over 50 shops and restaurants. The Pi’ilani Village Shopping Center has a grocery story, an Outback Steakhouse, and a Blockbuster Video store.
There are many dining establishments in the area, featuring everything from fast food to moderately priced chain restaurants to upscale dining offering Hawaiian and Pacific Rim cuisine. Seafood is a delight in many Kihei restaurants, but you’ll also find good steak houses, and even a Greek or Mexican restaurant. Nightlife here also includes dance clubs, karaoke and sports bars.
There are many things to do in Kihei, including golf, fishing, theaters, boating or just relaxing in the sun. In February, you can enjoy the Parade of Whales and Whale Day Celebration in Kalama Park. This event attracts 8-10,000 people each year.
The celebration is free and includes music by Hawaiian recording stars and dancing. A craft fair features approximately 80 local artisans displaying their craftsmanship.
