Maui Beaches

All of Maui beaches feature sparkling crystal-blue waters, tropical winds, and infinite azure skies.  Many of the beaches are renowned worldwide for surfing on a world-class level, as well as being suited for beginning snorkelers, beachcombers and families with children enjoying the sand and sun.

Maui water sports offers many activities for all levels of athleticism and skills and include the expected surfing, scuba diving, and kayaking, as well as sport fishing and snorkeling.  Additional Maui water fun can be enjoyed with tours of the ocean floor in a glass-bottomed boat, or boarding one of the charter boats to take a leisurely cruise and watch whales and dolphins break the surface of the waters.  There are several businesses which offer you the opportunity to learn surfing and scuba diving on many of the beaches.

Maui has 120 miles of coastline and over 30 miles of beaches.  Many of these offer beach parks with lifeguards, picnic facilities and restrooms.  Others are undeveloped and do not offer these amenities.  Most of the beaches feature white sand, but a few have black and red sands as well.  Some beaches are more suitable for surfing and wind surfing, while others are more suited for beachcombing and snorkeling.

Kama’ole Beach parks in Kihei have lifeguards, volleyball courts, and is excellent for swimming.  Mai Poina ‘Oe la’u Beach Park, also in Kihei, offers swimming, windsurfing and kitesurfing – and whale sightings are common in the wintertime.

Makena Big Beach is a Maui signature beach.  It features a seemingly endless span of white sand.  Adjacent to Makena Big Beach is Little Beach which offers excellent body surfing – but this is for the uninhibited as clothing is optional.

Also in Makena is the Maluaka Beach which is adjacent to the Maui Prince Hotel.  It offers excellent swimming and snorkeling and you may even be able to swim with the green sea turtles generally found here.

Wailea has several beaches as well.  Mokapu Beach is another excellent swimming and snorkeling beach.  Water sports equipment is available for rent at the concessions found in front of the Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort.  Polo Beach in Wailea is as popular with Maui residents as it is visitors.  It was named “America’s Best Beach” in 1999.

Ulua Beach Park is great for beachcombing.  In the early morning and at sunset, walkers and joggers come out in full force to enjoy the beautiful ocean and skies.  Wailea Beach is another excellent beach for swimming and offers restrooms and equipment rentals.  It also has a paved beachwalk that meanders past Wailea’s hotels and restaurants.
