The two communities of Wailea and Makena lie within a stone’s throw of each other in Maui County on the southwest side of the island of Maui. As of 2007, the Wailea-Makena population was 6,935, having grown at a rate of 22.29% since 2000.
Wailea, Maui
Wailea HI real estate development is guided by two important documents. A Master Plan stresses good community planning to ensure keeping a low density population. The Wailea Community Association has a guide for the development on Maui to ensure the preservation of the natural environment in all new building projects. As a result of these efforts to control population influx and the natural beauty of the area, Wailea was named one of the country's 99 Best Recreational and Residential Private Communities in America.
Unlike the drier areas of the island, the climate of the area here is conducive to the growth of trees, plants and flowers. So, as you enter Wailea, you will immediately notice the lush, green and meticulously manicured landscaping in the area. The annual low temperatures here range in the mid- to upper-60s and the annual highs run into the upper 80s.
As a vacation hot spot, Wailea is home to several prominent resort properties which include Grand Wailea Resort & Spa, Wailea Beach Marriott, Four Seasons Maui, Fairmont Kea Lani Maui, Wailea Beach Villas, and the Maui Prince. Visitors can also visit the Kula Botanical Gardens which is located on 8 acres and features not only gorgeous flowers and native plants, but provides unusual vistas of rock formations and panoramic valley views. The Gardens also has a koi pond, an aviary, picnic areas, and a gift shop for snacks and souvenirs.
Homes for sale in Wailea have underground utilities, and the roadways are landscaped to maintain the natural beauty of the area. Wailea offers many nearby amenities, including restaurants, championship golf courses, tennis facilities, plenty of shopping, and of course, beaches. Wailea real estate includes several single-family homes and condominium complexes which have gated entryways for enhanced security and privacy.
Makena, Maui
Makena is located four miles from Wailea. This is where you'll find "Big Beach". Although some development has been done, this beach is still ranked among Maui's best beaches. For the more adventurous types, adjacent to Big Beach is "Little Beach" which is Maui's popular “clothing optional” beach. While authorities frown upon sunbathing in the buff, this is one place where the rules are flexible.
Horse lovers can visit the Makena Stables, which offers a unique opportunity to saddle up and go for more than just “a trail ride”, but rather take a riding tour and experience the outdoors – Hawaiian-style!
